The History of Eyethu

The Eyethu Theatre, a landmark of cultural and historical significance, was built in 1969 by Ephraim Tshabalala, marking a pivotal moment in South African entertainment history. As one of the first Black-owned movie theatres in the country, it stood as a beacon of pride and empowerment during a time of social and political challenges. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Eyethu Cinema was the premier entertainment destination for the Soweto community, offering an unparalleled cinematic experience to its audience. With a seating capacity of over 1,000, it became a vital gathering place, fostering a sense of community and cultural expression.

Despite its closure in the 1990s, the Eyethu Theatre remains an iconic symbol of Soweto's rich heritage. Recognized today as a significant cultural and social landmark, it continues to inspire efforts to preserve its legacy and explore ways to integrate its history into modern developments.

The shopping centre spans 10,000m² and boasts a diverse range of national retailers. It also features two banks, and a lively food court, offering a variety of dining options. The Eyethu shopping centre underscore the dynamic interplay of heritage preservation and contemporary development in Soweto.
